Karen King's psychological thriller maintained the suspense right through to the end. But it could have been tighter and better. I felt that there was a good deal of repetition, especially with Freya, the female lead, and her thoughts as she continues to look for justifications for husband Phil's behavior.The story gives a strong, scary portrait of a controlling and manipulative husband. Phil is a real piece of work! Freya is actually a quite complex and realistic character. She second guesses herself, occasionally gives in to her own anger and rage, and hopefully looks to the bright side even when her instincts warn her not to.Usually I like when a story is told from alternating points of view. In this case, using multiple points of view reduced the suspense somewhat as it worked to eliminate speculation of guilt for some of the suspects.Thanks to publishers Bookouture and NetGalley for providing a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review. Someone tampered with Phil's brakes & he's been seriously injured in a car accident. Some of his ribs are broken, he's badly bruised & he's been in a coma for days. When he comes around, he no memory of the last two years of his life.His wife Freya has been keeping a permanent vigil by his bedside in the hospital. He recognizes her & remembers her name, but he can't remember a thing about the accident. The doctors assure them amnesia is normal after a traumatic brain injury. Someone wanted him dead. Who? Why? What had he done to make someone hate him? Why would anyone want to kill him? His life's in danger.Freya doesn't know what to do about their broken marriage. She had packed a suitcase & was going to leave him the night of the accident. They had fought earlier that night. He has no memories of their terrible arguments, but she does.Everyone thought they were the perfect couple & had a wonderful marriage, but that's not the case. Phil is violent, manipulative & abusive. He throws things, he lashes out, he hits her. He has a terrible temper. But she can't leave him now.It seems callous to leave him for something he can't remember he's done. Can they put the bad times behind them & start over? Should she leave him as she had planned or give him another chance? It seems cruel to abandon him when he's so weak and vulnerable leaving him alone to cope with his injuries & memory loss.
